Theology on Tap Second Mondays | 6:00–7:30/8:00 PM
Starting April 13 | Pilsner Inn, Church Street (SF)
Faith, questions, good conversation—and maybe a drink. Join us for Theology on Tap, a relaxed evening of community, laughter, and real talk about the things that matter. We’ll explore spiritual and theological questions in a lighthearted, grounded, and distinctly Lutheran way—everything from God and prayer to “why church?” to liturgy and beyond. No prep needed. No pressure. Just bring your curiosity (and maybe a friend). We’ll gather every second Monday at 6:00 PM at the Pilsner Inn. Come as you are, stay as long as you like. All are welcome. For more information, contact Pr. Christian.
Listening & Sharing Circle | Sundays, April 26 & May 3 |12:30 - 1:30 PM
During this time of transition, you are invited to a small, in-person listening and sharing circle following worship. These gatherings are an opportunity to share what has been on your heart and to voice any hopes or questions as we look ahead together. We give thanks for Pr. Bea Chun’s 11 years of faithful ministry at St. Francis, and we recognize that this season may bring a range of emotions for many. These circles are offered as part of Pr. Christian’s bridge ministry and will be gently facilitated. This time together will last about one hour. You are invited to attend one of the two sessions — whichever date works best for you. There is no agenda or business attached to these sessions—simply space to listen and to share. There is no pressure to speak — come as you are.
Membership
Are you interested in becoming a member of St. Francis? Voting Members are baptized and confirmed adult (or youth) members. They can have their membership transferred from another congregation, or complete a New Member class. Associate Members hold membership in another congregation, but wish to have a more permanent relationship with St. Francis. For more information, please contact Pr. Christian at pastor@sflcsf.org.
Help Us Fill Our Parish Hall Bulletin Board!
As we continue to celebrate the St. Francis community, we’re refreshing the bulletin board in the Parish Hall—and we’d love to include you!
We want to create a joyful, welcoming display that reflects the people who make this church feel like home.
Outreach Team member William Brogan will be taking individual headshots during coffee hour and fellowship time to help fill out the board. If you prefer not to be photographed, please let him know — we want everyone to feel comfortable and included. For more information or to schedule your photo, please see William Brogan or another member of the Outreach Team (Kenji Nishiura, Brian Border).
Pr. Christian is available for prayer, spiritual care and conversation. The best way to contact him is by email (pastor@sflcsf.org) or by calling the church office at (415) 621-2635. In an urgent situation or emergency, please call his cell phone at (510) 717-3221.
Notes from the St. Francis Council Meeting — March 17, 2026
Retreat
The Council held its annual retreat, which started with a dinner on March 6, followed by
a retreat on March 7. We began the morning with a spirituality session with the Rev. Dr.
Donna Allen from New Revelation Community Church, an ELCA congregation in the
East Bay. The afternoon focused on preparation for the call of a new Lead Pastor and
Strategic Plan priorities for the year.
Finances - The Council received the Treasurer’s report, along with the Endowment and Property financial statements. The Council also approved a resolution memorializing the amount of Pr. Christian’s compensation designated as a housing allowance, which was previously reflected in his offer letter.
Congregational Outreach Metrics - The Council again discussed the success metrics for our investment in Outreach and decided on four metrics to be reported to the congregation annually and two metrics to be reported annually. Valerie will send a letter to the congregation discussing how we will track the metrics over the year.
Metrics to be measured annually:
1. Number of people contributing time/talent to St. Francis worship, committees,
and programs
2. Number of people (members + non-members) making a financial contribution
3. Total amount of financial contributions
4. Number of new members
Metrics to be measured quarterly:
5. Attendance at Worship (in person + streaming)
6. Attendance at Non-Worship events
Anti-Racism Training - The Council discussed options for anti-racism training, which is required by the Synod for lay leaders during the call process. Kenji and Pr. Christian will develop a plan for this program.
Updates from Call Committee and Pr. Christian - Ken recapped recent committee activity, including the meeting with the congregation this past Sunday and the committee’s meeting the same day with Synod staff. Pr. Christian discussed the recent retreat, his pastoral care efforts, the new member class and coordination with both members and staff.
Property Repairs - Council reviewed the estimates from the Property Committee for chancel and baptismal lighting replacement work, but defer a decision on this project until we have the full project cost information including labor. The Council discussed brick repair proposals and asked the Property Committee to review and discuss further before making a recommendation for Council to consider on this project.
Other Business - Council approved giving staff a holiday on Easter Monday, April 6.
Elaine obtained a $500 ELCA World Hunger Daily Bread grant for St. Francis’ food and
hunger-related ministry. Per Elaine’s recommendation, Council approved distributing
$250 to Outreach, $125 to Senior Program and $125 to Food Bank. Valerie reported that the Endowment will be receiving a bequest from the estate of a recently departed – and much loved and missed – member of the congregation.
